Instructional Guide: How to Measure Your Nail Beds Using a Soft Measuring Tape
Measuring your nail beds accurately is essential for selecting the right size for press-on nails or other nail enhancements. Follow these steps to measure your nail beds with a soft measuring tape.
What You'll Need
- A soft measuring tape (preferably one with millimeters for precision).
- A clean, flat surface for resting your hand.
- Good lighting.
Step-by-Step Instructions
-
Prepare Your Nails
- Clean your nails to remove any polish, dirt, or oils.
- Trim and file your nails so the edges are even and free of irregularities.
-
Position Your Hand
- Place your hand flat on a clean surface with your palm facing down.
- Relax your fingers and keep them slightly spread apart.
-
Locate the Nail Bed
- Identify the nail bed: the area of your nail that is visible and not covered by skin. This is where the nail enhancement or press-on nail will sit.
-
Wrap the Measuring Tape
- Take the soft measuring tape and place one end at the widest point of your nail bed (usually near the base of the nail).
- Wrap the tape gently across the width of the nail bed to the other side. Be sure the tape lies flat and isn’t twisted.
-
Read the Measurement
- Hold the measuring tape steady and note the width in millimeters or inches.
- If your tape measures in inches, convert to millimeters by multiplying the value by 25.4 for precision.
-
Repeat for All Fingers
- Measure each nail individually, as the widths can vary. Record the measurements for all ten fingers.
Tips for Accuracy
- If you don’t have a soft measuring tape, use a strip of paper or string to measure the nail bed, then compare the length to a ruler.
- For best results, have someone assist you if measuring your non-dominant hand feels awkward.
- Double-check your measurements to ensure they’re accurate.
What to Do With Your Measurements
- Match your measurements to the sizing chart of the press-on nail brand you’re purchasing from.
- If your measurements fall between sizes, opt for the larger size and file down the nail for a perfect fit.
By following these steps, you'll ensure a snug, comfortable fit for any nail enhancement.
